　　疟疾能产生如此可预见的高温，于是在20世纪初人们曾经有意地患上疟疾－－用来治疗梅毒，梅毒是由一种对温度极其敏感的细菌引起的。当时的美国和英国，有许多疟疾治疗中心，成千上万的病人在控制条件下服用疟原虫，那是当时所知的治疗梅毒最有效的方法。当高烧袭来，梅毒被遏制，再配合奎宁类药物，病人便治愈了。正因此发现，奥地利医师Julius Wagner von Jauregg赢得了1927年诺贝尔奖。
